What’s it like to speak up about Palestine, or criticize Israeli government policies, in a country where authorities are known to conflate anti-Zionism with antisemitism? For a country that prides itself on learning from its dark chapter of Nazism, is Germany so intent on not being seen as antisemitic that it will defend Israel and Zionism at all costs? And in doing so, shift historical guilt onto Palestinians?

To try and understand the roots of Germany’s anti-Palestinian practices, The New Arab spent time in Berlin interviewing members of one of the biggest Palestinian diaspora communities, who have been affected by censorship of all forms of pro-Palestinian advocacy.

Germany’s Palestine Problem is part of The New Arab’s bitesize documentary series ShortDocs, going beyond the 60-second attention span demanded by our new scrolling habits, to explain key issues from the MENA region and diaspora that matter.
