Politici in Nederland struikelen over elkaar heen in hun adhesiebetuigingen aan het adres van Israel, na de grootschalige aanval van HAMAS van vandaag op Israelische doelen. De media lijken op hun beurt de Israelische berichtgeving over de ontwikkelingen klakkeloos over te nemen(is men onbekend met Israelische oorlogspropaganda?)
In de uitspraken van politici en in de berichtgeving gaat het uitsluitend over de aanval van HAMAS. Zoals zo vaak ontbreekt de context volledig.
De aanval van HAMAS komt niet uit de lucht vallen. De Palestijnen in Gaza staan bloot aan structureel Israelisch geweld – onder meer in de vorm van een al 17 jaar van kracht zijnde algehele blokkade. Door de blokkade is Gaza van de buitenwereld afgesneden geraakt. De leefomstandigheden zijn als gevolg daarvan inmiddels dramatisch verslechterd (zij zijn ‘voor mensen onleefbaar’ geworden, zoals jaren geleden al door de VN is vastgesteld).
De Palestijnen in Gaza hebben in die situatie twee keuzen: geheel in de ellende wegzakken en van de politieke agenda verdwijnen; of de aandacht van de wereld opnieuw op hun situatie vestigen door tot de aanval over te gaan.
Politici stellen dat ‘Israel het recht heeft om zich te verdedigen’. Maar het is Israel dat Palestijnen bezet houdt, niet omgekeerd; Israel knijpt Gaza af, niet omgekeerd. Toonaangevende mensenrechtenorganisaties hebben Israelische apartheid jegens de Palestijnen inmiddels gedegen gedocumenteerd.
Omdat alle politieke wegen afgesloten zijn om in de situatie verandering te brengen, hebben de Palestijnen in Gaza (en elders) het recht om zich – ook gewapenderhand – tegen hun onderdrukking te verzetten.

THE ATTACK
Politicians in the Netherlands are tripping over each other in their expressions of support for Israel, following today’s large-scale attack by HAMAS on Israeli targets. The media, for their part, seem to blindly copy the Israeli reporting of the developments (are they unfamiliar with Israeli war propaganda ?).
In the statements of politicians and in the reporting it is exclusively about the attack of HAMAS. As so often, the context is completely missing.
HAMAS’ attack does not come out of the blue. Palestinians in Gaza are subject to structural Israeli violence – among other things-in the form of an overall blockade that has been in place for 17 years. The blockade has cut Gaza off from the outside world. As a result, living conditions have now deteriorated dramatically (they have become ‘unlivable for human beings’, as identified years ago by the UN).
In this situation, the Palestinians in Gaza have two choices: sink completely into misery and disappear from the political agenda; or refocus the world’s attention on their situation by going on the offensive.
Politicians argue that ‘Israel has the right to defend itself’. But it is Israel that occupies Palestinians, not the other way around; Israel squeezes Gaza, again not the other way around. Leading human rights organizations have now thoroughly documented Israeli apartheid against Palestinians.
With all political avenues closed to change the situation, Palestinians in Gaza (and elsewhere) have the right to resist their oppression – even by force of arms.
