PA warns Israel against attacking Palestinian prisoners

Middle East Monitor  /  September 10, 2021

The Palestinian Authority yesterday warned Israel of the consequences of its continued attacks on Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli detention.

“The PA’s senior officials have sent a clear message to Israel, warning it against continuing to attack and harm the Palestinian prisoners,” the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club chief, Qadura Fares, told Anadolu Agency.

Fares added that the PA holds Israel responsible for the “repercussions and consequences of its aggression against prisoners that has been going on for days,” stressing that Israel’s continued attacks on Palestinians would “escalate the situation in Palestine.”

“The PA has called on the United States to pressure Israel to halt its attacks on Palestinian prisoners,” he pointed out.

PA sources have said that Israeli occupation forces were continuing to “randomly” harm Palestinian prisoners held in the occupation’s jails. For the third day in a row, Israel has been imposing punitive measures against the prisoners, including storming prisons, abusing and beating detainees, and transferring them to other prisons.

The measures come after six Palestinian prisoners escaped from Israel’s high-security Gilboa Prison on Monday, through a tunnel they dug from inside their cell.

There are currently some 4,500 Palestinians in Israeli prisons, 41 of whom are women, 160 children and 360 administrative detainees, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club.
