In a news conference in Tel Aviv, the Israeli prime minister warned that Israel would ‘settle the score with anyone who harms us’, after dual assassinations of the political leader of Hamas in Iran and a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon within the space of 12 hours. The killings of Ismail Haniyeh and Fuad Shukr were heavy blows to Hamas and Hezbollah, but also raised the stakes for Iran, which backs both groups and vowed revenge, fuelling fears of a broader regional conflict.
