Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh yesterday called on the European Union to revive the political process under the International Quartet’s auspices in a way that brings justice for the Palestinian people, Wafa news agency reported.
The agency said Shtayyeh met with the EU envoy to the Middle East peace process, Sven Koopmans and discussed the political developments, affirming the Palestinian leadership’s openness to a serious path that would fill the current political vacuum.
According to Wafa, Shtayyeh also called on the European envoy to pressure Israel to stop deducting funds from the Palestinian tax revenues which increases the financial burden on the government, especially in light of the sharp decline in international aid.
Meanwhile, Koopmans said the EU wants to be involved in the peace process, reiterating its support for the Palestinian people and its institutions, while stressing that he will do his best to revive the work of the quartet, which includes the EU, the United States, Russia and the United Nations.
