Israel’s Interior Minister Aryeh Deri said the Palestinian Authority would collapse within a week if it stopped security coordination with Tel Aviv.
“The security coordination is important for Israel, but it is more important for the Palestinian Authority,” Deri said in a radio interview yesterday.
He added that the PA’s threat to stop security coordination will not affect Israeli security much, and that the Shin Bet – Israel’s internal security service – can manage without coordination.
The Israeli minister refused to elaborate on what would cause the Palestinian Authority to collapse if it stopped coordination with Israel.
Remarking on future security developments, Deri expected more attacks against Israeli targets mainly in the Jerusalem area.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said on Monday that he has no objection to stopping security coordination with Israel, if Tel Aviv decided to annex large parts of the West Bank and the Jordan Valley as proposed in the US drafted “peace plan” known as the “deal of the century”.
Abbas added: “We can stop security coordination without any discussion, we have no objection if they continue on this line.”
