Shown at the 2012 London Palestine Film Festival as part of “The Spring of Young Palestinian Women Filmmakers”, a programme guest curated by Shashat, the Palestinian film NGO: Kamkamah looks at cultural shifts in Gaza, wondering if a culture of hiding has arisen, one in which masks are worn physical, personally, and socially and where people have learned to hide under the darkness of the sky and maybe even under the ground. The film was produced as part of a Shashat project called “I am a Woman from Palestine” in 2011, which used film training and exhibition to focus on specifically Palestinian women’s issues through film, aiming to engage wider sections of the population in thought and debate.

The Kingdom of Women

Dahna Aburahme 2010 docu 54 min.

The story of the women of Ein El Hilweh refugee camp between 1982-1984 represents an important, if rarely recalled, chapter in the history of Palestinian refugee women in Lebanon. Following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, the Ein El Hilweh camp was destroyed and its men imprisoned. The Kingdom of Women documents the community organizing spirit of the women during this period, showing how they managed to rebuild the camp itself, as well as to protect and provide for their families while the men remained captive. Moving between past and present, between animation and video techniques, Dahna Aburahme’s powerful account of this period draws on the testimony of seven women, while emphasising the importance of all women’s contributions to the survival of the Palestinian community in Lebanese exile during this era. www.youtube.com

Storyline
Czech Photographer Josef Koudelka grew up behind the Iron Curtain and always wanted to know “what was on the other side”. Forty years after capturing the iconic images of the Soviet invasion of Prague in 1968, the legendary Magnum photographer arrives in Israel and Palestine. On first seeing the nine-meter-high wall built by Israel in the West Bank, Koudelka is deeply shaken and embarks on a four-year project in the region which will confront him once again with the harsh reality of violence and conflict. Director Gilad Baram, Koudelka’s assistant at the time, follows him on his journey through the Holy Land from one enigmatic and visually spectacular location to another. In each location – soon to become a new “Koudelka photo” – a new scene unfolds, gradually introducing us to Koudelka’s method of working and his perception of the world he is documenting as well as the people he encounters. A fascinating dialogue emerges between Baram’s cinematography and Koudelka’s still photographs…
